LEATHERJACKETS![]() Most people know them as 'daddy long legs' - the insect that you may find in your bathroom or hovering around your lampshade! However, not many people are aware that the larva of the crane fly is a grey-brown cigar shaped grub called a ‘leatherjacket’. These grubs develop under grass during late August/September. They remain there over winter, eating the roots of the grass which results in brown tufty patches that resemble chafer grub damage. It looks at its worst in March / April. They stop feeding in mid-May to pupate, emerging as the leggy adults we all see in August. Often the turf damage mentioned above is made worse by foxes, magpies and badgers which pull up the turf looking for a good meal.
This can be controlled by the application of a product called Chlopyrifos. This can tank mix with Carbendazim (worm cast control) and the best time to apply it is when high larval populations are detected, or damage is first seen. Early treatment is recommended i.e. prior to Spring when the most damage is likely to occur. Please contact us if you would like to speak to a representative. |
