GIANT  HOGWEED

Picture
Heracleum mantegazzianum, commonly known as Giant Hogweed, is often seen on roadsides or river banks. The plants usually grow to a height of between 2 and 5 metres, but they have been known to reach up to 7 metres in some instances!

Introduced to Britain from central Asia, Giant Hogweed is now a noxious weed here. If the sap of Giant Hogweed is inhaled or comes in contact with human skin it can result in rashes or blistering and can leave long lasting scars. If it comes into contact with people’s eyes, it can cause blindness.

In the UK the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981,
it states that it is an offense to plant or allow Giant Hogweed to grow in the wild.

Weed Management have various methods of controlling this noxious weed. The best time to treat it is during the Spring (April/May) before it seeds. These treatments have to be carried out annually and the results monitored regularly, to ensure control is being as effective as possible.
